After being a VA (Virtual Assistant) for the past 6 years, it still amazes me that a majority of people that I speak to do not know what I do. People often perceive the word “virtual” to mean “not physically existing as such but made by software to appear to do so” and view Virtual Assistants as programs rather than people. In actuality, the term “virtual” in Virtual Assistants refers to the “”the absence of border controls”. The word assistant refers to “a person who assists or gives aid and support; helper.” Virtual Assistants are people who assist or give aid and support with the absence of controls relating to an employer/employee relationship.

VA’s are independent contractors who support multiple clients in a variety of industries from their own offices. We provide administrative, creative, and technical services based on the particular niche that we wish to pursue.
With this being said, VA’s come in all shapes and sizes (and I am not speaking of appearance). There is the entrepreneur VA who runs their own company while handling their own marketing, billing and workload. Then there is the subcontract VA, who is contracted by other VA’s to help handle their client’s workload. And lastly, there are companies who hire individuals to work as virtual assistants, obtain clients and pair the two.

The most important aspect to consider when choosing to work with a Virtual Assistant is your expectations. If you were to hire an in-house assistant, what would you look for in that candidate? Would it be an outgoing personality? Someone who is a go-getter or just does what they are told and doesn’t question things? Would you seek someone who is innovative and thinks outside of the box? Also, what type of personality do you connect with? Are you spunky and light-hearted or serious and always thinking about business? The goal is to have an assistant (virtual or in-house) that you connect with and can perform the tasks that are needed.
Reputable Virtual Assistants offer free consultations, which allow you to ask questions and ascertain whether you would be a good fit for one another. Think of it as an interview and don’t be afraid to ask for one if you are considering working with a VA. My company offers free consultations which can be scheduled by accessing our website.
